The Center for Israel Studies was founded in 2013 as an organization based in Vienna, the cradle of Zionism. It is dedicated to stimulating interest and enhancing the knowledge of modern Israel in its amplitude and diversity. It intends to attract scholars, students and the general public.
The center will host monthly public lectures on issues concerning Israeli history, society and culture, as well as films, artistic performances, and music. Prominent scholars from all disciplines in academia, international experts, as well as artists, authors and public figures will illuminate nuances of the contemporary, dynamic and polarized Israeli scene. The lectures are designed to serve as a high-level forum of exchange of perspectives and will take place in the Diplomatic Academy and the University of Vienna.
Our intention is to create a national and international academic platform of scholars in the study of Israel in collaboration with universities in and outside of Austria.
The center aims at developing interdisciplinary teaching programs and a curriculum for a BA program in Israel Studies, where the teaching staff will include members of the center as well as visiting scholars and international experts in the field.
The academic program will include block seminars, summer academy, conferences and symposia and encourage publications and translation of contemporary Israeli writers which will construct further bridges and generate new insights into Israeli society.
The Center will host artists and writers in residence and will contain an Israeli Film Club screening the wide range of Israeli cinematic production, accompanied by short lectures and discussions.
We are committed to broadening the understanding of the Israeli society and its culture amongst the general Austrian/German audience.
